Kaniva Groundwater – Safeguarding urban supply

Since the discovery of alleged illegal dumping of waste 15 kilometres south of Kaniva, GWMWater has been working closely with the Environment Protection Authority, local government and other relevant agencies to ensure the safety of Kaniva’s water supply. We have developed a fact sheet provides an overview of the supply system to address any community concerns.

Safe to drink?

No

The water is not safe for drinking. However, you can still use this water for household activities, such as watering gardens, flushing toilets, irrigation and laundry. You can also use it for showering or bathing, as long as you're careful to avoid swallowing the water.

Water supply

Your water comes from the West Wimmera Groundwater Management Area.  Extending from the western area of the Wimmera river, all the way to the South Australian border, and up north to the Big Desert, the West Wimmera GMA is an invaluable groundwater resource.
