GWMWater have started planning to upgrade urban customers in Berriwillock and Culgoa to a drinking water supply.
The proposal to upgrade the Mallee towns to a drinking water supply is part of GWMWater’s latest pricing proposal to the Essential Services Commission, which was given a preliminary nod in March 2023.
Managing Director Mark Williams said a drinking water supply will provide a more consistent water quality, extend the life of hot water appliances and contribute to the liveability of the local community.
As part of GWMWater’s 2023-2028 Water Price Review, customers in 11 towns were surveyed about a potential drinking water upgrade.
“During survey consultation with the Berriwillock and Culgoa communities in 2022, we found most residents were in favour of accessing drinking water.”
The Community Panel engaged to assist GWMWater in the development of the Water Price Submission helped inform the selection of Berriwillock and Culgoa, being mindful of overall affordability for all customers. The towns chosen are among the largest of GWMWater serviced towns without drinking water and have a history of water quality concerns.
Mr Williams said providing safe, high quality drinking water to as many customers as possible was a priority for GWMWater.
Customers in these towns will be able to enjoy safe and reliable drinking water, once the upgrades are complete.
